This tiny hairless Chihuahua is an adorable little hot mess, and unfortunately, he has some pretty big medical needs.

Doppy has an elongated soft palate, meaning the tissue at the back of his mouth extends too far into his throat and partially blocks his airway. Instead of air flowing freely, Doppy has to work harder with every breath—especially when he is excited, active, stressed, or warm. This can cause noisy or labored breathing, gagging, difficulty exercising, overheating, and interrupted sleep.

Although Doppy has lived with this condition for years and his surgery is not considered an immediate life-or-death emergency, that does not mean the condition is harmless. The constant effort required to breathe can place additional strain on his airway and may lead to worsening problems over time. His veterinary team at Cypress Fairhaven has made it clear that correcting the condition could significantly improve Doppy’s breathing, comfort, and overall quality of life. It could help him tolerate activity and warmer temperatures more safely, sleep more peacefully, and enjoy everyday life without every breath requiring so much effort. The estimate for his palate surgery is $1,940.62.

On top of his airway concerns, the tip of Doppy’s penis is swollen, thickened, and ulcerated. We initially hoped it was inflammation caused by being stuck outside of the sheath, but it has not improved with treatment. His veterinary team collected fine-needle aspirate samples to determine the cause and rule out transmissible venereal tumor, a contagious cancer found in dogs.
