For many students, the transition to college represents opportunity, independence, and a chance to build a better future. But for students from low-income families or those who are the first in their families to attend college, arriving on campus fully prepared is not always guaranteed.

The College Dorm Room Kit Initiative was created to remove that barrier.

Through a partnership between Jackson Youth Empowerment Foundation, Mallory Economic Development Advisors, and SOUL (Shaping Our Urban Leaders) Foundation, this initiative ensures 100 graduating Columbus City Schools seniors begin their college journey with the essentials they need to succeed from day one.

Each Dorm Room Kit provides students with practical items that many take for granted but are critical for a smooth start to college life. Kits include bedding, towels, personal care items, laundry supplies, study materials, and basic room essentials. These resources allow students to focus on what matters most when they arrive on campus—learning, growing, and building their future.

This effort is about more than supplies. It is about community investment in the next generation. When students know their community believes in them, it strengthens their confidence and sense of belonging as they begin this new chapter.

On July 15, 2026, students and families will gather at Wolfe Park in Columbus for a community celebration and send-off where dorm kits will be distributed to graduating seniors heading to college. The event will feature encouragement, mentorship, and a celebration of the hard work these students have invested to reach this milestone.

Each dorm kit costs $275 to assemble. While a full sponsorship covers an entire kit, donations of any amount are welcomed and appreciated.
