His personal mission aligned with SITC’s goal of advancing cancer immunotherapy. He believed the future of cancer immunotherapy depended on bold ideas, rigorous clinical trial design, and the investigators who bring it to life. Today, his vision continues through SITC's Clinical Immuno-Oncology Network (SCION) - a mentorship program that guides participants through the development of an immunotherapy clinical trial protocol - and the Martin “Mac" Cheever Excellence in Clinical Trial Design Travel Award.

The impact of his vision investment in the next-generation is clear:

Empowering investigators: 100% of attendees agreed SCION provided excellent education on cancer immunotherapy trial design.

About the Forward Fund

The future of cancer immunotherapy is rooted in research and education, primarily by early career scientists.

We established the SITC Forward Fund in 2012 to help support the science, development and application of cancer immunology and immunotherapy.

The Forward Fund endeavors to provide grants and financial support to:

Help attract the brightest young minds in cancer and/or immunology research to the cancer immunotherapy domain
Inform those outside of the cancer immunotherapy field about the promise of this modality. Cancer immunotherapy offers the potential to create long-term remissions and/or prolonged survival for people suffering from advanced cancer of a wide variety of types
Educate clinical oncologists regarding the application and potential benefits of this treatment modality
