Founded in 2009, I'm From Driftwood was created to share the real stories of LGBTQIA+ people everywhere — especially from places where being out can feel isolating or unsafe. At a time when public conversations about LGBTQIA+ rights were intensifying and authentic representation was still limited, the organization began collecting first-person stories to ensure that LGBTQIA+ people could see themselves reflected with honesty, dignity, and hope.

Over the past 17+ years, I'm From Driftwood has grown into a national nonprofit and community-powered archive of first-person video and written stories. We document experiences across generations, races, faiths, regions, and identities — from rural towns to major cities — capturing the full spectrum of queer life beyond headlines or stereotypes.

Our work includes producing in-depth 4–6 minute video stories, transforming those stories into short-form content to reach younger audiences on platforms like Instagram and YouTube, and preserving a growing LGBTQIA+ story archive for future generations. We also lead regionally focused storytelling initiatives that elevate voices in areas experiencing heightened anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation, ensuring that visibility reaches communities where it is needed most.

The impact of this work is deeply personal. One supporter shared, “Your site helped me come out at the age of 47. Thank you for your wonderful project. You and your team really help people all over the world.” A young viewer wrote, “I am a gay teen still in the closet… I am now totally okay with me being gay and a huge part of that is thanks to your videos. You saved my life, literally!”

That is why we do this work — to build connection, foster understanding, and make sure that anyone searching for hope can hear the message clearly: You are not alone.
