This weekend, in freezing temperatures, we rescued Durham, a sweet cat who had been silently suffering outside.

At the vet, we discovered the heartbreaking extent of her injuries:

Frostbite on her ear
A fractured left leg with ligament damage from an old injury (it may heal, but could still require amputation)
A massive abscess extending from her neck to her abdomen — over 1.5 cups of infection were drained

The abscess was life-threatening. Durham’s wound was left open to continue draining, and she is now on strong antibiotics (Convenia and Clavamox). Thankfully, the infection had not spread to her chest or abdomen, and her SNAP test (FIV/FeLV) came back negative, giving her a real chance at recovery.

Durham wasn’t able to be spayed yet — her body needs time to heal first. A dedicated foster has stepped up to keep her warm, safe, and isolated for the next 2–3 weeks, and she will return to the vet in one week for a progress check.

Durham is finally safe and no longer suffering outside — but her medical journey is just beginning.
