Our Story

The Disability Torah Project was born from a need for disabled wisdom to be experienced, valued, and centered in Jewish learning. Founder and director Mat Wilson says, "When I started this project, I was building the resource that I needed in the world. As a rabbinical student navigating both invisible and visible disabilities, I’ve often struggled to find representation and mentorship that reflects my experiences. I knew that if I was seeking this kind of learning, others were too. And I was right, the response has been incredible!"

Each week, the Disability Torah Project publishes a piece of writing by a disabled author exploring the weekly Torah portion (and now some holidays!) through the lens of disability. Some writers dive deep into the text, others reflect on their lived experiences, some engage with disability conceptually, and others dream about disabled futures. There’s no one right way to share disability Torah, and what matters is creating space for disabled perspectives in Jewish learning.

We've now brought together over 60 disabled writers, teachers, and facilitators to help grow the library of disability Torah. For 43% of our writers, this is their first time writing about disability and Torah in the same piece, and 95% of writers said they felt more empowered as a shaper of Jewish tradition because of their participation in the project.
