Elbowbumpkid Inc is a volunteer powered & community funded nonprofit. Our mission is to provide families impacted by Type 1 Diabetes with the opportunity to connect, thrive, learn and grow despite the diagnosis.

We are fueled by our volunteer board & committee members who are passionate about making a difference in the T1D community. The non-profit was named after Saige, nicknamed the Elbowbumpkid who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 17 months old in 2008 & Celiac Disease at age 12 in 2019. The Merwin family has been building a community, fundraising & raising awareness since the beginning which also involves partnering with other non-profit organizations that are dedicated to improving the lives of families with Type 1 Diabetes.

Elbowbumpkid Inc has created over 150 opportunities for T1D families to connect since 2019 & we're just getting started. Some of our programs include:

👧 Girl Power: For girls living with T1D, quarterly connection events. Run by girls, for girls.

🎓College Connection for students managing T1D away from home with mailed treat kits in the fall

🎓College scholarship program every spring

🫶Newly & currently diagnosed Family Support: Including low blood sugar kits, non RX supplies and peer connections for families navigating the early stages of diagnosis. We streamline essential information, highlight best practices & connect them with others to offer guidance navigating the early stages of managing the condition.

🧑‍🍳 Celiac-T1D Dual Diagnosis Program: A newer initiative launched in 2025 aimed at helping families cope with the compounded challenges of both diagnoses, with a focus on economic equity for local support providing kitchen supplies, starter groceries & free online resources. The online component is available wherever you live.

👪 Monthly connection events for children & families living with T1D

📘Diabetes education program scholarships

We fill gaps--we identify what the community needs, build the model & then execute!
