El Tímpano was founded in 2018 to address significant gaps in journalism, information access, and civic engagement that reflects, engages and informs the Bay Area’s large Latino and Mayan immigrant communities. With nearly 20% of residents across the Bay Area speaking Spanish at home, and thousands more speaking indigenous Mayan languages, El Tímpano connects immigrants to local issues and resources, amplifies their voices, and investigates their concerns.

El Tímpano fue fundado en el 2018 con el propósito de abordar brechas considerables en periodismo, acceso a información y participación cívica que refleje, incluya e informe a las grandes comunidades inmigrantes Latinas y Maya en el Área de La Bahía. Cerca del 20% de los residentes en el Área de La Bahía hablan español en sus casas, y miles más hablan lenguas indígenas Maya.
