OUR PROGRAMS

For the many global communities we engage with through our work, the ability to achieve optimal health and well-being is compromised by many factors — including: civil unrest, war, authoritarianism, natural disasters, economic crises and escalating impacts of climate change. We recognize that the roots of these factors lie in the social forces of racism, capitalism, and colonialism.

EqualHealth engages in the global struggle for justice and health equity by directly taking on these forces through our Social Medicine Courses and our CAR program.

Our Social Medicine Courses offer graduate-level health professional students in Uganda, Haiti, and the U.S. immersive, experiential, and transnational courses in health equity, the social and structural determination of health, and the principles and practice of global health in a local setting.

Community Milestones

This year, we have introduced faculty development sessions to strengthen our transnational model, to share teaching strategies across different locations and to find ways to improve the quality and impact of our courses.

We have supported the implementation of the social medicine course in new geographic regions and are collaborating on the development of a new version of the social medicine program in Armenia, thereby expanding our model to multiple additional regions. Additionally, we have just completed our 15th year of social medicine courses, graduating 40 equity-conscious health workers in Haiti and Uganda.

Our CAR program, which has grown to 17 member chapters in more than nine countries, along with our working groups, reaching hundreds of active participants, continues to center the voices of impacted communities to uncover the historical connections between racism and capitalism: radically imagining a future in which sociocultural, political, and economic systems work towards health equity, rather than against it.

An Insight Into Our Impacts: EqualHealth’s Work in Haiti & Beyond

For over a decade now, we have worked closely with Haitian health professionals to address social and health inequalities through leadership and capacity-building programs. As a result, key organizations and committed leaders have emerged to confront the systems of oppression in Haiti. In recent years, socio-political crises have created increasing instability and unprecedented insecurity in Haiti, impacting the Haitian community, the health system, our partners, and our community of health professionals.

Our CAR program has gathered partners from around the world to organize mutual aid campaigns for Haiti, hosting conferences and supporting FXB Harvard’s social medicine course with a community organizing curriculum, publishing articles on access to health and impacts of US interventionism in Haiti, participating in educational programs to learn more about use of film and art as tools for global solidarity and consciousness-raising, and co-facilitating health justice spaces like the Through the Portal conference in Chicago to build a deeper interconnected strategy for dismantling racial capitalism and health disparities around the world.

By organizing healing justice sessions like these, making public declarations, and providing resources for health workers, healers and community organizers EqualHealth continues to build power and solidarity by being in community.
