For over 50 years, Coffee House Press has been a staple of independent publishing. Now more than ever, we need your help to continue and expand that legacy.

Coffee House Press is a nonprofit publishing organization based in Minneapolis, MN since 1972. Our mission has always been to discover, highlight, and celebrate important and dynamic voices that may have otherwise gone unheard. We have published writers from around the world, from our own state of Minnesota to Ecuador, Spain, Denmark, Cameroon, and more.

Our books have won National Book Awards, been Pulitzer Prize Finalists, and, most recently, received nominations for The Booker Prize and the Ursula K. Le Guin award. Many of our titles are on the curriculum at universities, and we’re honored to have introduced readers to authors like Ben Lerner, Valeria Luiselli, Karen Tei Yamashita, and Saeed Jones.

Our vision is to continue discovering and publishing writers who are unafraid to push boundaries and who aren’t easily categorized. We strongly believe these voices are vital to expanding the world of literature and storytelling.

In the current economic and political landscape, it is becoming extraordinarily difficult to realize that vision.

As you may know, literature is the least-supported artistic discipline in the United States, receiving only 1.9% of arts funding. Here at Coffee House Press, we’ve seen a significant reduction in grant funding over the last two years. Cuts to organizations like the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) have had dire consequences for small, nonprofit publishers like us, who rely on donations to keep up with rising production costs and to continue publishing the books you love. For these reasons, we’re looking to our community for support.

Our goal is to raise $350k by December 15th, 2026 to support the future of Coffee House Press. With this contribution, we can continue to publish 8-10 books a year, acquiring exciting new manuscripts from emerging writers around the world. We can also implement upcoming projects, such as a collaboration with the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community to publish more Indigenous voices, the release of Mónica Ojeda’s debut poetry collection, and a collaboration with the University of North Texas to create a publishing curriculum for their School of Creative Writing and Performing Arts.

Every donation makes a difference!

A gift of $25 allows us to mail five books out to reviewers and the media.
A gift of $50 funds the creation of a reading guide for book clubs and classrooms.
A gift of $100 helps us print 50 “advanced reader copies” of a given book.
A gift of $500 pays for a graphic designer to create one of our book covers.
A gift of $1,000 covers a large part of our production process (printing a new book).
