This event can be joined both in person or online with the purpose being to raise awareness about the Fentanyl crisis that is killing both adolescents, and adults, at an alarming rate. This event is hosted by TXAF, Cedar Park Police Department, Williamson County Sheriff's Office, Bluebonnet Trails Community Services, and Rise Recovery. A representative from each organization will be there as a member of the panel to speak directly to you. In particular this panel will educate parents, family members, school faculty and anyone who wants to listen, in regards to the dramatic uptick of youth deaths in both Texas and the United States. Fentanyl is the cause of death in 75% of adolescent cases, yet so many adults remain unaware of how big this problem has truly become and how to handle it. Many parents are still in the dark on Fentanyl in general and even more so on how to address this issue with their child directly. We aim to answer your questions from the most basic such as - - What is Fentanyl? - Where is it found? - How should I approach my kid on this subject? - What are warning signs? - What is naloxone and how/when should I use it? - Where can I find naloxone? - What should my school be doing in regards to this subject? Plus many more... This event is to honor a local, Matthew Wright, who just recently was taken at the tender age of 18 years old due to a Fentanyl poisoning. He passed away unexpectedly on May 2, 2024 in his hometown of Cedar Park, Texas. Matt was born on April 2, 2006, the youngest of three to parents Angela and Gavin Wright. He was a passionate student, musician, and athlete, and earned recognition for his excellence in everything he put his mind to. Above all, Matt loved others fiercely. He was creative and success-driven, working numerous jobs as a teen and once was even found playing his saxophone for spare change on his street corner. Matt was accepted to Texas State University in San Marcos, where he was looking forward to pursuing a degree in psychology. He wanted to use his own experience as guidance to help support other young people who struggle with mental health. Matt was often his own biggest critic and only those closest to him knew how much he struggled with mental health, which weighed heavily on him even from a young age. His loving parents worked tirelessly to provide him with the best resources available to support him in his journey with obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, and depression. Matt will be missed dearly by all those who knew and loved him, which since his passing has proven a much larger number than even, he knew. He is survived by his mother, Angela; father, Gavin; two older brothers, Nathan and Sean; puppy, Dexter (who may have unapologetically been Matt's favorite family member); his grandparents, Carol and Michael Fuhrmann and grandfather, Colin Wright. He is preceded in death by his grandmother, Jen Wright. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting at https://txaf.org.
