Our Community is at a Crossroads

Literacy is a fundamental right, yet children in the foster care system often face significant barriers. Frequent moves and changing environments can leave a child without a single book to call their own. Studies show that only about 20% of students in foster care meet or exceed grade-level English Language Arts (ELA) standards (California School Board). FOSTER BOOK CLUB is committed to changing this trajectory.

The Growing Need

Currently, there are approximately 1,800 children in foster care in San Diego county. Our goal is to ensure that every kid in foster care has a book with foster care representation or themes that resonate with the foster care community. Studies show that kids are more likely to read books that reflect their experience. And reading more enhances literacy, which is a foundational element to academic success. Our hope is that books donated from Foster Book Club can help bridge the literacy gap.

Our Strategic Vision

We are launching this fundraising campaign to scale our operations and provide age-appropriate literature to children in transition. Your investment will support:

The purchase of 2,000 inclusive book titles.
Logistics and distribution to foster family agencies.
Reading experiences that resonate with kids in foster care.

Your Direct Impact

When you give to FOSTER BOOK CLUB, your contribution ensures that a child receives more than just a book; they receive a sense of ownership and a pathway to a better future. A $15 gift provides a book for one child, while $100 can provide a bag of books to a foster family agency.
