Harrison Bandabaila's Story
Against the Odds,
Growing up born and raised in Oakland, I’ve witnessed firsthand how difficult life can be. I’ve seen people I grew up with, people I knew and cared about, become caught up in the prison system. The hardest part has never just been seeing them leave, it’s knowing that so many people are no longer here, and carrying the feeling that I couldn’t do anything to help.
For a long time, I’ve felt like I was in a position where I wanted to make a difference but didn’t always know how.
Swimming has always been a part of my life. I grew up swimming competitively, but I never imagined that something I loved and trained for could one day become a way to help someone else change the direction of their life.
That’s why I’m taking on the Alcatraz Swim for a cause that means so much to me: helping people stay out of the prison system and creating opportunities for a different future.
This swim represents more than crossing the water from Alcatraz. It represents the distance between where someone is today and where they have the opportunity to be tomorrow.
For everyone I’ve known who didn’t get that chance.
For the families who have watched their loved ones disappear behind bars.
For the people who deserve another opportunity.
And for the community that raised me.
I’m swimming against life in prison and for second chances, hope, opportunity, and change.
If you’re able to support, any donation can help make a difference. This time, I’m using something I’ve always loved to help someone else have a chance at a life they deserve. ❤️🩹🏊🏾♂️
