A Remarkable Legacy

Fran Crumpler was widely regarded as one of the most influential horsewomen in the American Saddlebred industry. While she enjoyed tremendous success as a trainer, her greatest legacy is arguably her impact on judging, equitation, and the education of future judges and horsemen.

Fran helped establish many of the educational standards that continue to guide Saddlebred judging today. Through committee leadership, judges' clinics, mentoring, and countless volunteer hours, Fran influenced not only how horses are judged, but how judges are trained.

Fran's legacy continues through the Fran Crumpler Aspiring Judges Grant Fund, which was created to support the education and development of future American Saddlebred judges—a fitting tribute to someone who believed that well-trained, knowledgeable judges are essential to the future of the breed.

The Challenge Facing Our Industry

The American Saddlebred industry thrives on the expertise of its horsemen. However, many of our most knowledgeable horsemen and trainers face barriers to becoming licensed judges. The path to earning formal judging credentials—such as a United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) license or the Equine Sports Council (ESC) certification—presents several distinct barriers.

The path to a USEF license requires unpaid apprentice judging, potentially expensive travel to regional clinics, and application fees. The ESC program, although experience-based, still requires travel, credential submissions, ESC rule-book examinations, industry involvement, and continuing education.

For working horsemen, taking time away from clients, horses, and their families to fulfill these unpaid requirements creates notable financial and logistical strains. As a result, it is imperative that the industry continually recruit, develop, and support new judges to strengthen and diversify the judging pool and ensure a sustainable pipeline of qualified officials for American Saddlebred competitions.

Without a pipeline of new, qualified judges:

Regional shows incur high costs to fly in out-of-state judges.
The breed's market value is at risk without consistent, highly trained eyes evaluating horses.
Current judges face severe burnout, creating scheduling gridlock for show managers.

Removing the Barriers

The intention of the Fran Crumpler Aspiring Judges Grant Fund is to provide financial support that can be used to offset the financial, logistical, and geographic hurdles that prevent highly experienced horsemen and trainers from pursuing a judging license or certification.

The funds raised for the Fran Crumpler Aspiring Judges Grant will provide flexible support to aspiring officials to offset the specific barrier they are facing. The grant funds can be used by recipients to cover:

Travel & Lodging Stipends: Funding the travel required for remote candidates to attend mandatory national clinics and log diverse hours across different regions. Offsetting the out-of-pocket costs of flights and hotels so candidates can complete mandatory, unpaid "learner" judging hours at major shows.

Educational & Fee Assistance: Covering the cumulative burden of USEF licensing or ESC certification application fees, enrollment costs for judges' schools, and testing materials.

Real-World Continuity Support: Offsetting the costs of essential childcare or professional backup trainers so candidates can step away from their families and barns without disrupting their livelihoods.

Fran spent a lifetime giving back to this industry. Now we can carry her legacy forward!
