Backyard Ecology Design Series Program Overview

The Backyard Ecology Design Series is an immersive, four-part educational journey created to empower individuals, households, and communities with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to transform ordinary outdoor spaces into thriving, ecologically grounded landscapes. Rooted in the science of ecology and framed by the practical realities of urban and suburban life, this series invites participants to become active stewards of their land, no matter the size of their yard or the limitations they may face.

Designed specifically with Colorado’s semi-arid bioregion in mind, the series integrates place-based ecological literacy with hands-on practices that prioritize biodiversity, soil health, water conservation, and habitat creation. Each session builds upon the last, providing a scaffolded learning experience that blends technical instruction with creative design and community engagement. Participants are not only introduced to concepts, they are guided in applying them directly to their own spaces through personal design projects, practical exercises, and on-the-ground implementation strategies.
