We need your help to completely replace our beloved playground.

You all know how much the kids love the playground, but did you know how much it truly benefits their learning? Read on for some data from the CDC and Edutopia about the importance of play. And don't miss the incentives at the bottom!

Our mission says: "Pinecrest School is committed to providing a positive social and emotional environment for student development. The school provides an atmosphere that bolsters self-confidence and equips its students with the cognitive skills necessary to undertake and succeed in rigorous academic pursuits throughout their lives. It strives to reinforce basic values such as honesty, integrity, respect for others, and an appreciation for diversity." The data backs up what we already knew... recess plays a part in creating this environment and these skills.

Getting a break from classwork, exploring their own creativity, and enjoying unstructured time leads to many social benefits for students. Recess is one of the few times of day when students get to interact with their peers under less rigorous teacher supervision. From engaging leadership and negotiation skills to learning conflict resolution, recess has numerous social benefits.

Decades ago, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood developer Fred Rogers described the seven fundamentals of learning and growing, and they are still relevant today. On his show, he often said that students need time to just play. For example, simply giving students an empty cardboard box without any directions is really more important than giving them a prepackaged project where they follow the directions. During free play, students have time to use their imagination. As a result, they are able to build their creativity, confidence, cooperation, and problem-solving skills. (Edutopia.org)
