MLK50: Justice Through Journalism is not a typical newsroom. Our difference starts with the belief that chronic poverty doesn’t happen by accident or because of a lack of effort. It’s a robbery — the systemic theft of someone’s time, health, dignity and opportunities. So in our reporting, we examine power and policy to call out those who must be named.

That’s how we shift the narrative about Memphis and the lives of Black, brown, and working-class residents. Our work begins in the community so they can’t be demonized and their concerns can’t be absent. At MLK50, that’s what we call fair, balanced and ethical journalism.

This is why we believe our reporting is “bad news for the powerful, good news for the people."
