Rabbit dumping is the act of abandoning domestic pet rabbits in public places. Rabbit abandonment is a large-scale issue happening throughout North America.

Four out of five rabbits bought as pets are abandoned or die within a year.
Domestic rabbits are the third most abandoned pet in the United States.
The lack of education regarding proper rabbit care is a large contributor to the issue of pet rabbit abandonment.
Abandoned domestic rabbits are unable to survive in the wild due to their lack of natural survival instincts, often dying by starvation or getting killed by predators or cars.

Dumping of pet rabbits is not only cruel, it is illegal. (Arizona Revised Statutes, § 13-2910). But despite its illegality, in Arizona, animal control is not required to respond to and capture domestic rabbits, and many shelters refuse new surrenders due to capacity issues. (Arizona Revised Statutes, § 11-1013).

Furrytail Bunny Rescue is the only nonprofit animal shelter in the state of Arizona that is solely dedicated to rabbits and accepts rabbits from the public of all ages and health-statuses. Founded in 2016, we house the largest number of abandoned, feral, and surrendered domesticated rabbits in the state at over 300 rabbits. Furrytail is a volunteer-run rabbit rescue and sanctuary that rescues, cares for, and finds homes for dumped and feral domestic rabbits.

Our programs focus on rescuing abused and abandoned rabbits, rehabilitating injured or sick rabbits, caring for rabbits until they are ready for adoption, educating the public on rabbit abandonment and responsible pet ownership, and promoting the benefits of rabbits as companion animals and animals that can make a real impact in the lives of some of our most vulnerable communities.

For 2026, we want to focus on spaying or neutering all the unfixed rabbits at our rescue, increasing the adoption rate of the rabbits at the rescue, enhancing our education and outreach program, and establishing our Therapy Bunnies Program, which provides support for seniors, people with disabilities, and increased literacy amongst children who struggle to read.
