In 2001, a group of Terrell High School alumni formed an organization to honor the legacies of two beloved coaches. Herman Furlough, Jr. and Gilbert Willie served the Terrell community for many years as coaches, teachers, and administrators. Not only did these men coach and lead sports programs, their values and dedication made a positive impact on the Terrell community and shaped the lives of many students.

The Furlough-Willie Scholarship Foundation, founded by these former student athletes grateful for the invaluable impact these men made in their lives, has taken steps to honor these coaches through a scholarship program. This program seeks to recognize the assistance and support provided by these coaches during their tenure and further the education efforts of current and future Terrell High School student athletes. Scholarship recipients are selected based on merit, character, and commitment to growth. Scholarship recipients also gain the added value of having access to the Foundation’s members as on-call mentors who provide leadership and guidance in many professional fields such as accounting, banking, law, education, medicine, and entrepreneurship.

The Foundation has awarded over 52 scholarships over the past 23 years, each providing a Terrell High School graduating athlete with funds to further their education.
