From the time he was a little boy, Daniel Daniélo had one goal: to help people heal.

Growing up in a dangerous area of Port-au-Prince, he saw violence and suffering up close. It shaped everything he wanted to become. He dreamed of being a doctor—but after being forced to flee his home at 14 and with little financial support, that dream slipped out of reach. So he chose the next closest path: nursing. He worked relentlessly, pushing through instability, financial hardship, and uncertainty.

Until one day, at age 23, everything changed.

Daniel was hit by a car.

Doctors fought to save his leg, but they couldn’t. It had to be amputated.

In a moment, the future he had worked toward once again looked bleak.

But Daniel didn’t stop.

He finished his nursing degree. And now, his greatest dream is simple: to walk across the stage at his graduation.

The Reality

In Haiti, daily life is already shaped by instability. Many communities face ongoing violence, fragile infrastructure, and a healthcare system that is stretched beyond capacity. In some areas, clinics have closed entirely, leaving families with few places to turn when they need care most.

When a Haitian loses a limb, they are losing one of the only freedoms they have left: the ability to walk. The best-case scenario is often not a prosthetic—it’s a sturdy walking stick. Most of them never expect to walk on two feet again.
