Join your neighbors in our continuing mission to transform the Prospect Steps (100 Cortland Avenue) into a vibrant community space! Thanks to generous city grants, your neighbors secured two grants to help fund expanding our community garden, improving security, adding sidewalk landscaping, and constructing a landscaped bulb-out. These two grants require the community to raise approximately $90,000 in donations to match the funds available through the grants.

Once the expansion and construction are completed, the community plans to add art to the existing retaining walls and stairs. The goal is to have an iconic, positive, and cheerful feature that will welcome people to our wonderful neighborhood.

These improvements will beautify the area, enhance safety, and engage Bernal neighbors in this open space.

Who We Are

We're a group of neighbors who love Bernal Heights and want to improve community-based activities, engagement, and quality of life.

This project began in 2021 as we re-engaged with our friends and neighbors following the pandemic. We wanted to build more community bonds and address local security and blight issues in the area around the Good Prospect Community Garden on the unaccepted block of Prospect Avenue. We cleaned and battled graffiti, weeded and pruned, and we met new neighbors who shared the same concerns while caring for the area. We engaged each other and began to knit the community together.

One desire expressed by the community was to expand and improve the existing garden that was originally built 37 years ago on the eastern side of the block. Adding more garden plots will help address the long wait list for a plot at the Good Prospect Community Garden and improve neighborhood engagement by more than doubling the number of active gardeners. Improving the lighting and visibility will add to community safety. Adding art will increase community pride and a sense of belonging.
