Ayomikun Dokun's Story

⚕️ I Couldn’t Play Sports—So I’m Choosing to Care for Those Who Do

From a young age, I was captivated by the world of medicine and science. Some of my best memories are watching the National Geographic and Discovery channels with my grandpa, asking questions, and dreaming of what it would be like to one day wear a white coat.

My parents raised my brother and me with a strong sense of service. We were taught to volunteer, give back, and use our experiences to uplift others—a lesson I carry with me on my journey to becoming a physician.

Living with Sickle Cell Disease, it’s easy to assume that my desire to study medicine comes solely from being a patient myself. But there’s more to my story.

⚽ Why Sports Medicine Speaks to Me

I’ve always loved sports, but because of my condition, I haven’t been able to play like others. That’s why I’m drawn to sports medicine—not just to be close to the game, but to help athletes recover, manage pain, and stay strong.

I want to be the kind of doctor who blends science with empathy, someone who doesn’t just treat injuries, but helps people get back to doing what they love. I believe in the future of medical advancements that shorten recovery times, reduce pain, and improve quality of life—and I want to be part of making that future a reality.

🎓 Why This Scholarship Matters

Receiving the Warrior On The Rise Scholarship is more than a blessing—it’s an investment in my future as a medical professional. It affirms that my dedication, hard work, and vision matter.

This scholarship will help broaden my perspective, support my education, and open doors to the many diverse paths within the medical profession. It’s helping me become not just a doctor, but a healer, an advocate, and an example for other young warriors like me.

🌟 Help the Next Warrior Rise

This year, I’m proud to be one of 27 students awarded the Warrior On The Rise Scholarship—more than double the number from previous years. That growth is thanks to supporters like you who believe in what’s possible for students living with Sickle Cell.

When you support the Warrior On The Rise Scholarship Fund, you help more students like me transform our experiences into purpose.

Thank you for believing in us.
