Under the Influence 006

Please join us for Under the Influence 006, which will take place at the unique Schmalix Residence, designed by Fung + Blatt Architects.

Under the Influence is a series of conversations that expands upon the concepts of Los Angeles Modernism. This radical movement rejected predetermined rules and embraced experimentation, striving for freedom of expression in all areas of culture. Modernism also catalyzed an interest in social equality, politics, healthy environments, new materials, and innovation, ushering design into a new and transformative era. The series brings together architects, artists, and designers from all over the world to engage in dialogue with local architects, landscape architects, and creatives in LA's quintessential iconic modernist spaces. We aim to uncover the influence of this radical approach on today’s culture and will reflect on what we do next by bringing foreign and local voices into experimental and progressive conversations.

Two speakers are invited for each talk: one local and one from elsewhere. Each speaker will present their work, highlighting the experimental approach’s influence that Los Angeles Modernism set in motion. The presentation will be followed by a conversation among the speakers and with the audience.

Speakers: Susanne Zottl (Vienna) and Andrew Zago (Los Angeles) + architects Fung + Blatt will speak briefly about the event location- the Schmalix Residence.

Bios:

Susanne Zottl

Susanne Zottl, architect / ZottlBuda, Vienna is focussing on precise recording and perception of what is there - and what is no longer there. We believe in the malleable value of existing objects, and their transformation according to contemporary needs and visions of our future. We prefer prototypes.

Born in Vienna, Susanne Zottl earned her diploma in architecture at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in 1990, and her Master in Architecture at the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles in 1993. She obtained her license as an Austrian Architect in 1995 and has been running her own professional practice since 1998.

Parallel to her professional work, she taught at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, as a visiting professor in architecture at the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles, and at SCI-Arc’s European Program in Vico Morcote, Switzerland. She has been teaching at the Institute of Architecture and Design at the Technical University Vienna, held a professorship at the Institute for Art and Architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, and is currently teaching at the Institute for Experimental Architecture at the University Innsbruck, Austria.

Andrew Zago

Andrew Zago, principal of Bouwman Zago, has over thirty years of professional experience in architecture, urbanism, and education. He is a native of Detroit, holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University. In 1987 he founded AKS RUNO in Los Angeles with Bahram Shirdel and later, Shirdel Zago Kipnis with Bahram Shirdel and Jeffrey Kipnis. In 1991 he established Zago Architecture—Bouwman Zago’s predecessor firm. Zago is a member of the design faculty at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI- Arc) and Clinical Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has also taught at Harvard University, Cornell University, the University of Michigan, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and the Ohio State University. From 2003 to 2007 he was the founding director of the Master of Architecture program at the City College of New York.
