My name is Ruth Akinyi, and I am the founder of Wasichana Tunaweza (Girls We Can) — a small but powerful community-based initiative in Kenya helping teenage mothers reclaim their education through permaculture and poultry farming.

🐣 My Story

When I was still a teenager, I became pregnant and had to drop out of school. It was one of the hardest seasons of my life.

But through determination — and a small income from my own chickens — I was able to return to school and complete my education.

That experience changed everything.

It inspired me to create a program that now helps twenty young mothers do the same:

learning permaculture, managing indigenous chicken enterprises, and rebuilding their future with dignity.

🌾 How the Program Works

Each young mother receives hands-on training in:

Permaculture principles & regenerative farming
Organic flock management
Natural health for indigenous chickens
Small business & marketing skills

Upon graduation, each mother receives indigenous chickens to start her own micro-enterprise.

Income from eggs and chicken sales helps her support her family and return to school, turning what once felt impossible into a new beginning.

Girls’ Education

Helping young mothers stay in school reduces poverty, strengthens families, and transforms communities for generations.

By teaching sustainable farming and ecological awareness, we cultivate confident young women who can build healthier, more resilient communities.

🌼 The Dream Expands: Kanyawegi Learning Centre

In 2025, I shared a dream with two close friends:

“I want a daycare where the children of young mothers can learn, play, and receive three meals a day while their mothers return to school.”

Today that dream is real.

Kanyawegi Learning Centre now cares for 36 children — providing safety, early learning, and nutritious meals. Resources are limited, but hope is abundant.

The children are learning permaculture for kids, planting their first crops, and discovering what it means to care for the earth.

We still urgently need chairs, uniforms, food, and learning materials — but the community spirit keeps us moving forward.
