At Sweet Roots, our story begins long before baking ever entered the picture. It begins at home, as a mother to two autistic boys, navigating the long, often uncertain journey of diagnosis. Like many families, we started small — learning through home-based therapies, adjusting routines, celebrating small milestones that others might overlook, and slowly building understanding one day at a time. Alongside motherhood, I am a social worker, and that dual lens has shaped everything I do. I’ve always been drawn to both macro and micro levels of change — sitting with families in their most personal moments while also recognizing the systems, policies, and stigmas that shape those experiences. Living in both worlds made one thing very clear: real support has to exist at every level, from the home to the broader society. As our journey continued, so did our voice. We began advocating in our own way — speaking openly about autism, challenging stigma, and sharing our experiences through social media to help other families feel less alone. What started as personal storytelling grew into a quiet form of activism: creating space for understanding, acceptance, and honesty in a world where autism awareness is increasing rapidly, but true inclusion is still catching up. That is how Sweet Roots was born — not just as a business, but as an extension of our story and our values. Our baked sweets carry more than flavor; they carry intention. Today, we are committed to using our platform to give back, raising awareness and supporting organizations like the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, whose work centers autistic voices, dignity, and leadership. This is more than fundraising for us — it is a continuation of our journey. A way to honor our sons, support other families walking similar paths, and contribute to a world where autism is not just recognized, but respected, understood, and included at every level of society.
