Sicangu people once lived in thriving, kinship-based societies, with a vibrant culture grounded in connection to land, buffalo, and language. Colonization decimated that way of life, but today we are bringing it back. For decades, outsiders have tried to tell us how to address the challenges in our community. But the solutions have always been within us. We just needed the resources to bring them to life.

The Siċaŋġu are one of the seven oyates (nations or council fires) of the Lakota Sioux people, an Indigenous people of the Northern Plains. Native people make up about 3% of the U.S. population, yet Native-serving causes receive just 0.4% of philanthropic dollars, much of which goes to non-Native-led organizations.

From food insecurity in a food desert,
to our language on the brink of extinction,
to our people navigating health challenges with only one hospital,
Sicangu Co is here to make our homelands happier, healthier, and easier to live in, just as our ancestors did on this very soil.

Food Sovereignty Initiative Farmer’s Markets, empowering local entrepreneurs, supporting low-income families, and bringing the community together.
Food distributions through FSI and the Wolakota Buffalo Range, including boxes with buffalo meat to nourish our relatives. 🦬
Wakanyeja Ki Ṫokeyaḣc̄i school, now serving 50 students, teaching Lakota language, culture, and holistic well-being.
Sicangu Health Initiative, launching new projects, programs, and cohorts to advance community physical and mental health in the coming year.
