Hi friends,
Caitlin here. Many of you know I switched industries about 18 months ago and moved into the nonprofit sector. But not just any nonprofit.. I wanted to do work that spanned generations, work that was intentional about permanently disrupting harmful systems, work that fed my soul while helping feed the souls of others. And so I found myself in prison! My motivation for doing this work is rooted in rich soil--that works to heal past trauma, and participates in the creation of a better system; a system that is not waiting for my children or any other children with statistical risks stacked against them.
What many of you don't know is how often my little family has flirted with system-impaction over the past 15 years. From several short jail stints [of the kid's other bio-parent], to using state assistance during tough years, to all of us navigating mental illness, addiction & sobriety as a family. While the kids and I are very stable & love our life, we now find ourselves at the beginning of a new chapter as their dad awaits sentencing in jail.
My organization, RISE--who has a mission to break generational cycles of incarceration in Nebraska--has helped me prepare for this exact moment. Has helped reinforce, through grace & action, that we are all so much more than the worst thing we've ever done. That we are human. That we are resilient. That we can have hope in even our darkest moments, and we can be brave enough to sit with others through theirs.
This week, we are asking for donations to support our grassroots Giving Day 2024 so that we can continue the vital work of breaking the generational cycles of incarceration.
Will you help support my work?
