About Only Sunshine Sanctuary

History: Founded by Kristy Venrick-Mardon, Only Sunshine Sanctuary sits on a one-acre plot in Sacramento county, California. Kristy's dream was to be able to help any animal in need. It all started when she met Harold, a shy pig at the Sacramento SPCA who won her over when he rolled over for a belly rub. Kristy's vision expanded beyond individual acts of assistance, leading to the establishment of the sanctuary with the aim of extending care to a broader community.

Mission: Bring Only Sunshine into the lives of the Earth’s precious creatures. Be a loving, caring force that provides food, shelter, and medical care to animals in need. Encourage like-minded community members to come together to make a positive impact in the lives of all living things.

OUR CAUSES

Community-Minded Animal Welfare: We prioritize community engagement, advocating responsible pet ownership, animal care, and compassion for all creatures.
Sanctuary on Wheels: Our "Sanctuary on Wheels" initiative takes our rescued animals to adoption events, breaking barriers between rescue and the public. Our Bunnies N' Books program at Wild Sisters Book Co has been wildly successful promoting responsible bunny ownership and recruiting new foster and adoptive families.
Park Bunny Rescue Project: Focused on the "bunny park" in Citrus Heights, CA, our project rescues, spays/neuters, vaccinates, and finds loving homes for abandoned bunnies. Since 2021, we've rescued 117 bunnies, aiming to halt the cycle of abandonment and overpopulation in Sacramento county.
Ending Bunny Abandonment: Collaborating with local authorities and the community, we tackle bunny abandonment at its roots. Engaging in city council meetings, we successfully increased signage at the Citrus Heights park and gained support from law enforcement.
Comprehensive Animal Care: We ensure proper nutrition, medical attention, and a loving environment for all animals in our care, spanning a diverse range, including cows, pigs, chickens, goats, ducks, rabbits, chinchillas, rats, and more. Many of our animals have intensive medical needs, like Bruce the chinchilla who requires monthly dental care due to past neglect.
Community Engagement: Fostering community responsibility, we run outreach programs and events. Our L.E.A.P. program involves high school students in monthly sanctuary lessons and workshops, promoting animal education and leadership.
Continuous Growth and Impact: Committed to ongoing improvement, we strive to rescue more animals, expand educational efforts, and collaborate for lasting positive change in both animal and human lives.
