Last winter, a single mother we will call Renee called ASA in tears. Her car, the only way she could get to work, get her daughter to school, and keep food in the house, had broken down on the side of the road. The repair estimate was $842. Renee had $11 in her bank account.

For two weeks she tried everything she could think of. She walked four miles to work in cold weather. She borrowed rides from coworkers when they were available. She kept the heat low in her home to save on power. She skipped meals so her daughter wouldn’t have to. The car stayed where it died, silent and unmovable, while life continued to pile up around her.

We covered her repair, completed a full safety inspection, and had her back on the road within forty eight hours. When we called to tell her the keys were ready, she sobbed and said, “I haven’t felt hope in months. Thank you. You gave us our life back.”

Stories like Renee’s are not unusual. They arrive every day. Parents who risk losing their jobs because they cannot afford a two hundred dollar alternator. Elderly veterans who become homebound when their only vehicle fails. Individuals trying to leave unsafe living situations who have no transportation to escape. Families who pay their rent and then just pray their car lasts one more week.
