GPS Network Meeting: Decolonizing Community Organizing

A conversation with Monica Cadena

Psychedelic organizing carries inheritances it did not choose. The structures many of us default to — the nonprofit form, the conference, the working group, the board — come with assumptions about who leads, who is consulted, and whose knowledge counts as expertise. Meanwhile the communities with the longest relationships to these medicines are often the last invited, and arrive to find the terms already set. As our societies grow and formalize, these patterns harden. What would it mean to organize differently? What do we borrow from movements that have been at this far longer than we have? And what are we willing to change about how our own organizations actually work, not just how they describe themselves?

In this session, Monica will share what she has learned across more than a decade of movement work in psychedelic organizing, in independent media, and in building spaces for healers of the diaspora about who gets left out of these rooms and what it takes to build differently from the start.

From there, we will open into a broader conversation, inviting participants to bring the tensions they are navigating in their own societies: the gap between stated values and actual practice, the question of who holds decision-making power, and what changes are genuinely within reach.

Before the session, take a few minutes to sit with this: in your society, who makes the decisions that matter, and who is affected by them? Where do those two groups overlap, and where do they not?

Connect. Learn. Grow Together.

Join fellow GPS members for our bi-weekly community gatherings, held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. Each session features a rotating mix of programming — from educational offerings and peer-led discussions to networking sessions and collaborative problem-solving.

Come to exchange ideas, deepen connections, and co-create the future of psychedelic community leadership.
