Our Story

On Grant Street in Durham, North Carolina, something beautiful is growing.

For over 100 years, neighbors here have cared for one another, shared stories, and built a strong community despite the challenges that historically Black neighborhoods often face.

Now, the Grant Street Community is coming together to create a community garden — a space where residents can grow fresh food, rest in the shade, and enjoy the beauty of the neighborhood together.

This garden will be more than plants in the ground.

It will be:

🌱 A place where children learn how food grows
🌱 A peaceful gathering space for neighbors
🌱 A reminder that beauty has always lived on Grant Street

The garden will include raised beds, seating areas, outdoor lights, a water source, tools, bird feeders, and native plants that attract pollinators and birds.

It will be a space where people can behold the beauty that has always existed here — a beauty that reflects the dignity, creativity, and resilience of the residents themselves.
