Help Us Rebuild the Village

We have all heard the saying, “It takes a village,” but somewhere along the way, too many of us learned how to survive without one. Parents are carrying responsibilities that were never meant to rest on one person alone. Young adults are expected to know how to navigate adulthood simply because they turned 18. Children and teenagers need trusted adults outside of their immediate homes who will encourage them, guide them, hold them accountable, and show up consistently. At the same time, adults are trying to heal, raise families, build careers, manage finances, and figure life out while often carrying experiences they have never had the space or support to address. Our older generations hold decades of wisdom and lived experience, yet there are fewer intentional opportunities for that wisdom to reach the generations coming behind them.

People can live in the same neighborhoods, attend the same schools and churches, work in the same communities, and still feel like they are doing life alone. Rooted in Grace & Purpose was created because we believe rebuilding strong communities requires more than responding to people when they are already in crisis. We have to rebuild the relationships, resources, opportunities, and support systems that help people become stronger before everything falls apart.

Why the Village Matters

The need for stronger connection is not just something we feel; the numbers reflect it too. The CDC reports that about 1 in 3 adults in the United States feels lonely, while approximately 1 in 4 adults reports not having the social and emotional support they need. Strong social connections are associated with better mental and physical health, increased well-being, and longer, healthier lives.

The transition into adulthood presents another challenge. In 2023, approximately 4.15 million young people ages 16–24 were disconnected from both school and work, and research has connected youth disconnection with lower earnings, less education, poorer health, and lower well-being later in adulthood. These challenges are especially important when we consider the economic realities in our own community, where approximately 19% of Columbus, Georgia residents and 20.2% of Russell County, Alabama residents live in poverty.

Those statistics may be placed into separate categories on a report, but people do not experience life that way. Poverty, trauma, social isolation, employment barriers, financial instability, difficult life transitions, limited mentorship, and a lack of consistent support can overlap and reinforce one another. A financial setback can quickly become a family crisis, while a young adult without guidance or a strong support system can struggle to find their footing. A parent who is already stretched thin may have very little room for one more emergency, and someone going through a difficult transition may need much more than a referral or a list of phone numbers.

Sometimes what people need is someone willing to walk beside them, teach them what they were never taught, connect them with the right resources, remind them of what they are capable of, and continue showing up after the immediate crisis has passed. That is where we believe the Village can make a difference.

What We Mean When We Say “Rebuild the Village”

Rooted in Grace & Purpose is a faith-inspired nonprofit serving individuals, families, and communities impacted by trauma, poverty, and life transitions. We take a holistic approach because people's lives cannot be separated into neat little boxes. Emotional wellness affects relationships and employment. Financial instability affects families. Transportation can determine whether someone keeps a job. Confidence, mentorship, opportunity, and access to resources can influence whether someone continues moving forward or begins feeling stuck.

We also believe that we cannot talk seriously about strengthening children without strengthening the adults and communities surrounding them. We cannot expect young people to become healthy, thriving adults if we wait until they are already struggling to create support around them, and we cannot expect parents and caregivers to pour endlessly into everyone else without also having places where they can grow, heal, connect, and receive support themselves.

That thinking is the foundation of The Village Initiative, our multigenerational approach to building stronger people, families, and communities. Rather than creating one program and expecting it to meet everyone's needs, The Village is being designed around different stages of life. Children and youth, young adults, adults, families, older adults, and elders will have programming and curriculum tailored to where they are developmentally and what they are navigating at that stage of life, while still remaining connected to the larger Village.

A seven-year-old does not need the same program as a 19-year-old, and a 40-year-old does not need the same support as a 72-year-old. What they do have in common is the need for connection, belonging, opportunity, and people who care what happens to them. We want children growing up surrounded by safe adults, teenagers seeing examples of healthy adulthood, and young adults having guidance while they learn to navigate employment, money, relationships, responsibilities, and independence. We want adults to have opportunities to heal, strengthen their families, develop as leaders, and pour into others, while older adults and elders remain connected and have meaningful opportunities to pass down their knowledge, stories, skills, and wisdom.

That is what rebuilding the Village means to us. It is not simply putting people in the same room. It is creating intentional relationships between people and generations so that knowledge, support, opportunity, accountability, and care can move throughout the community instead of stopping with one person.

We Have Already Started

Although Rooted in Grace & Purpose is still growing, this vision is not sitting on a shelf waiting for someday. We have already begun bringing women together through community gatherings where we have honest conversations about sisterhood, what women need, what it means to have a village, how we can better support one another, and what stronger community relationships could look like. We are also building women's and men's cohorts because rebuilding the Village cannot become the responsibility of women alone.

At the same time, we are recruiting volunteers, mentors, facilitators, community leaders, and board leadership who believe in the vision and want to help build it. We are developing the curricula that will guide our different life-stage programs and identifying community organizations whose expertise can complement our work. We do not want Rooted in Grace & Purpose to try to become everything to everyone. Instead, we want to build strong partnerships so that when someone needs services beyond what we provide, we can connect them to trusted organizations while continuing to provide the relationships and community support that brought them to us in the first place.

Practical learning will also be part of the Village. We are developing workshops around areas such as financial literacy, workforce readiness, healthy relationships, leadership development, professional and social skills, creativity, entrepreneurship, and other everyday skills people can actually use. Some workshops may teach something as practical as proper table etiquette or creating a custom door hanger, but the larger purpose is always connection, confidence, skill-building, exposure, and giving people opportunities to learn from one another.

We are also developing the Purpose Closet, which will provide clothing, professional attire, and other practical resources to help remove barriers for people who need them. Sometimes an opportunity can be affected by something as basic as not having appropriate clothing for an interview, work, school, or an important life event. Meeting practical needs is part of our holistic approach because we do not believe dignity should disappear simply because someone is going through a difficult season.

One of our major goals is preparing for the launch of our Young Adult Transition Program for ages 18–25. This program will provide intentional support in emotional wellness, financial literacy, workforce development, life skills, healthy relationships, mentorship, leadership, resource navigation, and community connection. Rather than waiting until launch day to start searching for mentors, partners, volunteers, and resources, we are building that Village now so those young adults enter a program surrounded by an actual network of people prepared to support them.

A curriculum can provide information, but people still need people. We want to build both.

Why Your Support Matters

Because Rooted in Grace & Purpose is still in its early stages, support received now helps shape the foundation of what this organization can become. Donations help us continue developing curricula, hosting community gatherings and workshops, purchasing participant and program materials, building the Purpose Closet, preparing volunteers and leaders, strengthening our technology and organizational systems, expanding community outreach, reducing barriers to participation, and preparing for the launch and expansion of our life-stage programs.

Financial contributions are important, but money is not the only thing a Village needs. We also need people willing to volunteer, mentor, facilitate workshops, share their professional expertise, introduce us to community partners, donate resources, open doors, sponsor programming, and simply tell someone else that this work exists. A healthy Village is not built by one organization doing everything. It is built when people begin recognizing that each of us has something we can contribute.

For one person, that contribution may be $10. Someone else may own a business and choose to sponsor a workshop. Another person may have years of financial experience and volunteer to teach budgeting. Someone may donate professional clothing to the Purpose Closet, mentor a young adult, introduce us to a potential funder, or simply share this campaign with their network. Those contributions look different, but every one of them can strengthen the Village.

Why Rooted in Grace & Purpose?

Our name represents what we believe about both people and communities. Rooted represents the strong foundations needed for lasting growth. Grace reflects the grace of God that carries us through difficult seasons while also honoring the memory and legacy of the founder's late mother, whose nickname was Grace. Purpose represents our belief that circumstances do not erase a person's value, gifts, potential, or ability to contribute something meaningful to the world.

People can experience trauma and still heal. They can experience poverty and still build stability. They can make mistakes, experience setbacks, go through difficult transitions, and still move forward into something different. We believe people deserve opportunities to discover what comes next, but they should not always have to figure it out by themselves.

Building Something That Can Last

The Village Initiative is bigger than any one program because the goal is to create something that can continue across generations. A child who grows up supported by the Village can eventually become a young adult who continues receiving guidance while taking on more responsibility. That young adult can grow into an adult who contributes to the same community that once poured into them, becoming a parent, mentor, leader, auntie, uncle, advocate, volunteer, or resource for someone coming behind them. Eventually, that same person may become an elder whose experience helps guide another generation.

That kind of cycle is how knowledge gets passed down instead of lost, how relationships become stronger families, and how stronger families contribute to healthier communities. We are not trying to recreate something our community never had or suggest that strength has disappeared. The wisdom, resilience, creativity, leadership, love, and willingness to care for one another are already here. What is often missing are the intentional structures that allow those strengths to connect across families, generations, organizations, and neighborhoods.

For us, rebuilding the Village does not mean trying to go backward. It means carrying forward the things that were valuable, being willing to address what did not work, and creating something stronger and more responsive for the generations coming next.

Help Us Rebuild the Village

When you support Rooted in Grace & Purpose, you are helping us build the foundation for that vision. Whether your contribution is $5, $25, $50, $100, or more, it helps us continue developing the programs, resources, relationships, and infrastructure needed to move this work forward.

If giving financially is not possible right now, there are still ways to become part of the Village. You can share our story, volunteer your time, offer a skill, become a mentor, connect us with a business or organization, introduce us to someone who should know about this work, or simply continue following along as we grow.

Our children and young people deserve to grow up knowing there are people beyond their immediate household who care what happens to them. Our young adults deserve guidance as they learn how to navigate adulthood. Adults and families deserve spaces where they can strengthen themselves while building relationships with others, and our elders deserve opportunities to remain connected and pass forward what they know.

The generations coming behind us deserve more than inheriting the same struggles without the support to navigate them. They deserve stronger roots, meaningful opportunities, healthy connections, people in their corner, and a community willing to invest in who they can become.

That is the Village we are working to rebuild, and we would love for you to be part of it.
