PALS Animal Life Savers and Salem Cat Aid are coming together to create something big.. We are opening a cat shelter!

Let’s talk about it!

Who we are: PALS Animal Life Savers (PALS) is a no-kill, all-volunteer feline rescue group committed to the well-being of local cats, and has been in existence for over 30 years! We operate through foster homes, and our adoption center within the Salem PetSmart. The PetSmart location isn’t going anywhere, but realistically, we’ve outgrown it and need additional space.

Salem Cat Aid has only existed for 4 years, and is one person under the moniker. But, Cass is also on the PALS board of directors, so PALS absorbs and helps with a lot of the work Cass does.

Why the community needs a cat shelter: We know, there are others. As stated above, the amount of cats in need far outnumbers our foster network and our adoption space, PLUS most shelters will not take cats with behavioral issues, certain illnesses, or of an older age. We want to step in and fill this gap.

So our shelter won’t just be about adoptions. It will also be about rescuing, and rehabilitating.

The goal is for our space to be largely cage-free. Individual cat rooms will house small groups of friends, and more cranky residents will get their own space to help them settle in.

Good news: We have the location already. And it’s perfect. It has 9 cat rooms, lots of storage, two staff rooms, reception, and a large community room that we are going to use for ongoing fundraising events (hint: it will involve people getting to come in and hang out with our cats while doing various activities!).

Where is it?: Okay that’s a tiny secret for now. But we will tell you that it’s just over the Salem line in Peabody. Super easy to get to.

Why we need funding: We lucked out finding this space, but our baby needs renovations. Some of them (plumbing) are big ones. Some (painting) are small. We need enclosures (despite the rooms being cageless, enclosures are still required in case we need them), all sorts of kitty supplies, furniture, and a bunch of human supplies too. And going into this is a scary leap of faith, and truthfully a rent cushion going in would be huge for us.

We will also use funds for cat medical needs, any emergencies that may occur, and also a small portion will go towards merchandise that will continue long term funding for us. Honestly, there is a significant list of things needed.

And that’s why this fundraiser exists. To help us bring this safe space for cats to life.

Any amount that you can contribute is wonderful, but we have some donor tiers too! We want to put your name on our wall to thank you for helping us start.

$100-249: Your name goes on a donor plaque!
$250-499: You get an individual 5-inch plaque with your name, business, a memorial message, whatever you’d like.
$500+: An individual 10-inch plaque with your name, business, memorial message, or even a logo.

And we thought it would be fun to give you the opportunity for you to help us name the cat rooms (this comes with a plaque hung i a community space too)!
