Ecoflix support the Sloth Conservation Foundation

Sloths are meant to live their lives in the trees, not on roads, not on power lines, and not in danger. That’s why Ecoflix is proud to partner with the Sloth Conservation Foundation, an organization doing beautifully practical, life-saving work to protect sloths and reconnect fragmented rainforests in Costa Rica.

The Problem

Expanding urbanisation has turned once-continuous rainforest into a patchwork of roads, farms, towns, and power lines. For sloths, this is devastating. Sloths cannot run, jump, or fly. They move slowly and rely entirely on overlapping tree canopies to survive. When trees no longer connect, sloths are forced to climb down and crawl across the ground, a journey that can take hours and leaves them extremely vulnerable.

Many attempt to cross roads using electricity cables. In Costa Rica alone, an estimated 3,000 sloths die every year from power line electrocution, with countless others killed by cars or attacked by dogs. As a result, sloth populations are declining rapidly, and both native sloth species are now listed as conservation concerns.

The Solution: Sloth Crossings!

Sloth Conservation Foundation’s “Sloth Crossings” are canopy bridges that reconnect forests and allow sloths (and many other arboreal species!) to move safely from tree to tree without ever touching the ground. And they work!

✔️ 370+ bridges installed
✔️ 8,000 hectares of forest reconnected
✔️ 82% reduction in wildlife injury and conflict in target areas

That means fewer sloths hit by cars, fewer injured, and fewer needing rescue.

A Better Bridge for the Planet

The original bridge design, a single rope, proved the concept but had limitations. It couldn’t span long distances, moved too much for some animals, degraded quickly in tropical conditions, and released microplastics as it broke down. So the team went back to the drawing board.

The result? A new bridge design made from repurposed electricity wires and telephone cables:

More durable and stable
Able to span longer gaps over roads
Used by many more species
No new plastics added to the environment

This is conservation done right: protecting wildlife and the planet!

What Your Donation Makes Possible

This fundraiser will support the construction and installation of new-generation Sloth Crossings. Once funding is secured:

Each bridge takes about two weeks to build
Installation follows shortly after
Most bridges are fully completed within 1–2 months

The Sloth Conservation Foundation team will also be documenting the process from construction to installation, and installing camera traps to capture real footage of wildlife using the bridges.
