When leaders weaponize law and bureaucracy against those seeking safety, Jewish community understands the moral weight of what happens to those refused entry – from the refugees on the St. Louis sent into the hands of Nazis to modern-day refugees who have not been able to come to the U.S. because of the suspension of the U.S. refugee resettlement program. When immigrants are rendered to an El Salvadoran prison without due process and the immigration status of more than one thousand students is revoked, we question whether our laws are grounded in dignity and justice. These actions do not align with the call to welcome the stranger.

The United States has experienced historical lows in which we have abandoned core values and succumbed to xenophobic fervor. But we refuse to allow these lows to define us. Connected to a series of HIAS vigils, let us join together on Thursday, July 24 from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. to hold a Together in Welcome Vigil to remind the public and elected leaders who represent us that we we are stronger and safer when we protect each other and stand up for our collective humanity. The vigil will include a program with speakers and sign waving. Register to get the location.
