Holding the Change: Grief and Ambiguous Loss After Brain Injury

Grief after a brain injury can be complex, ongoing, and difficult to name. There may be no clear ending, no shared language, and no simple path forward.

This three-part series explores the concept of

ambiguous loss and how it can show up in the lives of people living with traumatic or acquired brain injury.

Together, we’ll explore what it means to grieve changes in identity, abilities, relationships, and expectations while learning how to make sense of a reality that may feel unfamiliar or unresolved.

Session 3: Carrying the Grief

In our final session, we’ll explore what it means to carry grief forward rather than waiting for it to completely resolve.

First 30 Minutes: Understanding and Living With Grief

We’ll explore:

Grief that does not fully resolve or “complete”
Building a life with loss, rather than waiting to live after loss
The cyclical nature of grief
Trigger moments such as holidays, milestones, anniversaries, and comparisons to life before the injury

Final 30 Minutes: Reflection & Practical Tools

We’ll make space for:

Questions and discussion
Reflection on personal experiences of grief
A simple “Grief Plan” for navigating difficult days and trigger moments

This session offers a compassionate space to recognize that grief may not be something we simply “get over.” Instead, we can learn ways to carry it, make room for it, and continue building a meaningful life alongside it.
