Who We Are

POOR Magazine, is a poor and Indigenous people–led (501c3) organization dedicated to providing revolutionary housing, art, education, and advocacy to silenced youth, adults, and elders in poverty seeking to establish a permanent, rent-free healing model and housing solution in Los Angeles.

The Homelessness Crisis

More than 75,000 individuals experienced home-lessness across Los Angeles last year, most of whom are Black, Indigenous/Latino and LGBTQ people, whose communities are underfunded, over-policed, and incarcerated. Job loss and evictions are the most common reasons for homelessness locally. The streets are increasingly unsafe for houseless people, who are already 16x more likely to die of a sudden death due to the harshness of their living conditions. Violent vigilantism against unhoused people is increasing and this violence is often aided and abetted by local police, who continuously illegally dismantle encampments and threaten residents with arrest.

The Homefulness Solution

LA needs Homefulness, a houseless peoples permanent and HEALing solution to homelessness - providing rent free, supportive forever homes, with on-site indigenous healing, education, arts, media & ComeUnity launched with permission, prayer & protocol from 1st Nations peoples. Homefulness is the solution that poor, houseless, indigenous, evicted, disabled, and false-border-terrorized peoples have dreamed, loved, and fought for.

Self-directed solutions led by houseless people cost less and create real, permanent, supportive, and rent-free forever housing. Our solutions at POOR Magazine include: The Sliding Scale Cafe, (free diapers, organic produce and organic meals served to 600+ houseless elders and families per week), a tuition free liberation school for houseless/no-income children, a liberation radio station and writing, poetry and theatre workshops for houseless adults and Homefulness residents to name a few of the many services we provide daily. We also have Himmetka (Ohlone concept of Emergency preparedness) to provide water and emergency support to the neighborhood when, not if, emergencies (like the LA fires) happen.

We are working to identify potential sites for Homefulness locations to provide immediate rent-free housing to houseless and formerly houseless individuals and families in LA, and we need your support to make it happen. Our goal is to find sites that would provide two spaces for supportive community: a radical addiction recovery space and multigenerational family housing by and for houseless people.

The love and liberation of Homefulness is a solution for now and later and forever. This is a call for collective redistribution so that whatever comes in the next months and beyond, the sum of our love in action protects and sustains our kin and this model of what must be built for our world to survive.
