Why the Utah Housing Coalition Is Putting This On

Housing is more than a roof over our heads. It is the foundation for health, stability, opportunity, and belonging.

Yet across Utah, too many people are struggling to find a safe, affordable place to call home. Behind every statistic is a person, a family, a neighbor, or a community navigating impossible choices. The housing crisis can feel overwhelming—but understanding the problem is where change begins.

That’s why the Utah Housing Coalition is bringing Housing on the Big Screen to our community.

Over three evenings, we’ll use the power of film to bring housing issues into public conversation.

We’re not gathering just to watch movies. We’re gathering to see, listen, learn, connect, and act.

Each screening will create space for honest conversation about what is happening in Utah and what we can do together to build communities where everyone has a place to call home.

What to Expect

Each evening will include:

🎬 A powerful documentary screening exploring housing, poverty, homelessness, incarceration, and the systems that shape our ability to find and keep a home.

💬 Community conversation where we can reflect on what we’ve seen, hear from others, and connect the stories on screen to the realities in our own communities.

📣 Opportunities to take action with practical ways to become a stronger advocate for housing solutions in Utah.

🤝 A room full of people who care—advocates, service providers, policymakers, filmmakers, community members, and neighbors coming together around a shared belief that housing matters.

The Films

September 17 — No Place to Grow Old

Director: Davey Schaupp

We begin by examining what happens when people reach later life without the housing stability they deserve—and what it means for a community when older adults have nowhere safe and affordable to call home.

October 15 — A Decent Home

America ReFramed | Director: Sara Terry

What does a decent home mean, and who gets to have one? This film explores the lives of people living in manufactured housing and challenges us to rethink assumptions about affordable housing, dignity, and economic security.

November 19 — Breaking Chains — In Our Own Voice

Film Crew Collective at Utah State Correctional Facility

We close the series by elevating voices from inside the Utah State Correctional Facility and exploring the connection between incarceration, housing, and the barriers people face when rebuilding their lives.
