Emergency Update 4/17

Housing is taking a lot longer to find and the hotel costs are adding up. We may not be able to find housing until the end of next month and unfortunately our potential cosigners for the lease do not qualify which means we cannot get cheaper housing and will likely have to put up to 6 months rent down. So long as we raise at least 1000 a week, Alex is safe from homelessness.

Alex is a 23-year-old trans woman and a non-ambulatory wheelchair user with cerebral palsy. She can’t work, and she needs hands-on help with most daily tasks. After years of abuse and betrayal—first from her birth family, and then from facilities that were supposed to protect her—Alex doesn’t feel safe making major decisions alone. She relies on a very small circle of people she trusts to help her navigate medical care, housing, and basic survival.

On April 1, Alex is being forced out of her assisted living with nowhere safe to go.

The “fallback” plan being pushed for her is a medical shelter. For Alex, that isn’t a neutral option—it’s a danger. It would mean losing stability, losing autonomy, and being placed in an environment where neglect and mistreatment could destroy her physically and mentally. Alex is trying to do the only thing that has ever worked: get somewhere safe, accessible, and stable—an apartment—so she can finally rebuild her life with support from her preferred caretaker (her chosen brother).

Alex’s story (why this is urgent)

Alex has been bounced through systems that treat disabled people like paperwork instead of human beings. In late 2023, she decided she couldn’t survive being controlled and warehoused anymore. She asked friends for help creating an exit plan. That urgency increased when her HRT medication was taken from her at her mother’s request, despite Alex being a competent adult.

After a serious illness, Alex spent over a year in a hospital waiting for placement. When she finally got out, she was pushed into environments that repeatedly failed her—unsafe facilities, inadequate care, retaliation for speaking up, and traumatic experiences that left her more afraid and more trapped than before.

Since entering her most recent placement, Alex has endured medical crises, neglect, harassment, and retaliation—including being threatened with removal whenever concerns were raised. The stress and trauma have triggered severe episodes, including seizures and suicidal crises. No one should have to live like this. Alex is not asking for luxury. She’s asking for a chance to live.

Now she’s facing another cliff: April 1. If she doesn’t land somewhere safe and accessible, she risks being forced into settings that will break her down again.

Why Alex needs support right now

This fundraiser is to keep Alex safe and stable long enough to secure permanent support and housing:

Housing costs for ~6 months while her DDA voucher application is processed
Short-term accessible hotel costs (wheelchair-accessible room) starting April 1 if no placement is secured yet (about $115/night)
Basic move-in needs (she owns almost nothing beyond clothes, a phone, and a computer)
Medical costs and necessary care that insurance doesn’t fully cover
Emergency expenses that come up when a disabled person is being displaced on a deadline.

If any funds remain after Alex is safe and housed, they will be used to support another LGBTQ adult (18+) in need of safe housing
