iHOPE-Kids- A Ray of Hope Foundation, led by Drs. Christina Miyake and Sara Stephens, provides life-saving genetic testing and biobank storage for families who have lost a child to sudden cardiac arrest. This work was inspired by Baby Ray Skaggs Jr., who passed away unexpectedly at just 10 months old. Thanks to Dr. Miyake’s efforts, his DNA was preserved, and years later, a potential explanation for his death was found—giving his family crucial answers and hope.

Now, Drs. Miyake and Stephens want to ensure all families have what they need to prevent these tragedies. Sudden cardiac arrest often signals a genetic condition that may also affect siblings or other family members, putting them at the same devastating risk. Through genetic testing, Dr. Miyake's team can identify these conditions while Dr. Stephens aims to understand who is at risk, ultimately preventing similar tragedies. However, this testing can cost up to several hundreds to thousands of dollars and is often inaccessible to families, especially since insurance doesn't cover testing after death.
