When I was cast in Pericles/Twelfth Night six years ago, something in my bones told me life would never be the same, but I had no idea that I would gain a family and grow not only as an artist, but as an arts administrator and leader in the Los Angeles theatre community. Independent Shakespeare Co. has given so much to so many, and we must show up for LA's theatre company.
If creating and sharing art in community wasn't enough, our summers are full of partnerships with local organizations that uplift culture, civic engagement, and philanthropy. As Artistic Associate for Social Justice, it has been beautiful to witness the growth of our partnership with SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition over the last few years. Our hygiene kit builds of critical supplies for hundreds of our unhoused neighbors have become a highlight for ensemble and audience members alike.
We have broken ground on the permanent stage(!) which means our production needs will grow. Your donations are necessary for us to continue to provide FREE accessible theater to 44,000+ Angelenos while paying our staff, cast, and creative team a living wage -- a rarity in LA Theatre.
It has been said that artists are humanity’s first responders. Our community has seen so much devastation from the wildfires and I also deeply understand that there are so many causes both here and abroad that need your support and advocacy.
I humbly ask that you give what you can to support the artists who steward us in communal storytelling, spark empathy, hold a mirror to society, and provide us the joy and entertainment that sustains us.
Consider all the ways in which Indie Shakes and the arts are steeped in your community/escape/life and what would be missing without us?
