The Irish Wolfhounds Baseball Club will take on Team Germany in a series of historic exhibition games in Tucson, Arizona on February 23-24, 2025. The Wolfhounds are raising money to help players travel to the games. A portion of the funds raised will go to the Irish Youth Baseball program, to help the next generation of Irish baseball players.

The Games

The Irish Wolfhounds have been invited to play Team Germany at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, the site of the World Baseball Classic Qualifying Tournament. Germany will be using these games to prepare for their upcoming WBC appearance the following week.

These games are friendly warmup exhibition games for Team Germany. For the Irish Wolfhounds, they are friendly games with a much deeper significance.

The Irish Wolfhounds Baseball Club

The Irish Wolfhounds Baseball Club was created to demonstrate that there are many Irish American dual citizens who are being prevented from representing Ireland on the baseball diamond. The Wolfhounds roster includes over three dozen players with college and professional experience, who have been denied an opportunity to try out for Team Ireland.

These games will give the Wolfhounds an opportunity to take the field against one of the top baseball programs in Europe, to further demonstrate that Ireland should be competing at Europe's highest levels.

The Wolfhounds Roster

Because of the timing of the games, the Wolfhounds will not have access to many of their players because the majority of the Wolfhounds roster is still currently playing in college. Several players in the affiliated minor leagues are also unable to play in these games. The Wolfhounds roster for these games will be supplemented by guest players, many of whom have Irish roots but do not qualify for to play in the World Baseball Classic. These players agree with the mission of the Wolfhounds and are playing to give the WBC-eligible players an opportunity to take on Team Germany.

Fundraiser Details

This fundraiser is necessary because these games are on short notice and there is no funding available from the WBC or the Irish American Baseball Society. Players are committed to paying for their uniforms, flights, and hotels. Money raised in this fundraiser will be pooled and divided up amongst Wolfhounds players, to help reimburse some of the costs of the trip.

Raising Money for the Irish Youth Baseball Program

A portion of the funds raised will go to the Irish Youth Baseball Program, to provide funding, equipment, and coaching for youth baseball players in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Team Germany

Germany is ranked #17 in the world and #4 in Europe. They are headed to the WBC Qualifiers thanks to a strong performance in the 2023 European Championships. Many of the German players have experience in affiliated minor league baseball and the German Bundesligia is one of the top baseball leagues in Europe.

The WBC Qualifiers Tournament

Germany will take on China, Colombia, and Brazil in the WBC Qualifying Tournament from March 2-6, at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Arizona.
