As I train for an Ironman—a 2.4‑mile swim, 112‑mile bike ride, and 26.2‑mile run—I’m often asked the same question: Why would you put yourself through that much suffering? This is my answer.

Growing up alongside my younger brother Conor, whose life has been shaped by seizures and countless hospital visits, I’ve witnessed a kind of strength that most people never see. Conor faces challenges every single day, yet he continues to show resilience, determination, and joy in ways that constantly inspire me. Through him, I’ve learned to be grateful for each day and to never take a single moment for granted. He has taught me that no matter the circumstances, you show up and strive to be the best version of yourself.

This race is not for me alone. It is for Conor, for families affected by DYNC1H1, and for anyone fighting battles that others may never fully see. Endurance sports have given me something I never expected: clarity of purpose. I realized I wasn’t training just for myself, but for those who can’t. While Ironman training is undeniably difficult, it pales in comparison to the challenges faced daily by individuals living with rare neurological disorders.

I hope to use this journey to strengthen my mind, body, and spirit, not just to become a better athlete, but a better man. As a future physician, I know the path ahead will be demanding. I am committed to carrying the perseverance, empathy, and hope I’ve learned from both Conor and endurance sport into my future practice. Grit, faith, and community have shaped me, and they will guide me as I enter medicine.

As the Ironman motto says, “Anything is possible.” Conor reminds me of that truth every single day. I hope this race serves as a reminder that growth often comes through discomfort, and that true strength lies in embracing the process rather than chasing perfection.

While there is currently no cure for DYNC1H1‑related disorders, continued research brings us closer to better treatments and better lives. My hope is that every mile I train and every step I take on race day helps move us one step closer to that future.
