One Call Changed Everything

The nurse handed me the phone and said I was allowed one phone call. One call to decide where the rest of my life would begin. It was discharge day at the detox center, and after a week inside, I was leaving with only the clothes on my back and a bus pass.

No home. No job. No plan.

Who do you call when you have nowhere to go?

That one call led me to a Goodwill shelter and a single mat on the floor. I begged them to save that mat for me. It was the only thing standing between me and going back to a life I had barely survived.

By then, I had lost almost everything a person can lose. My family's trust. My job. My apartment. Even the papers that proved who I was.

All I had left was one last chance. And just enough willingness to take it.

Then a Recovery Residence opened its doors to me.

It was not a miracle. It was a clean bed in a safe, substance-free home. It was the women down the hall who had walked my road and understood my fear, because they had felt it too. It was counseling that helped me untangle the trauma beneath my substance use. And it was time, which turned out to be the thing I needed most.

The changes came in small, ordinary moments. I slept in a real bed. I built a resume and earned my first paycheck in years. When I was too afraid to walk into a doctor's office after years away, a volunteer drove me there and sat beside me in the waiting room. Slowly, I rebuilt the relationship with my mother that substance use had nearly destroyed.

I have been substance-free since October 19, 2002, and I have not walked a single day of that journey alone.

Today, another woman is standing where I once stood.

Here is something most people don't know. After leaving detox or treatment, most women have no choice but to return to the very environment that fueled their substance use disorder. And research shows that more than one in four return to substance use on the very day they are discharged, while close to two out of three use again within the first month.

It is not a matter of willpower. It is a matter of where you go when the doors close behind you.

Every one of them leaves detox or treatment facing the same question I did: where can I go that won’t pull me back under?

Now the good news. In one of the most rigorous studies ever done on recovery homes, people given a room in a recovery home were about half as likely to be using two years later as those who left treatment with ordinary follow-up care alone.

Half.

A safe bed turns out to be one of the most powerful things you can give a person in early recovery. And yet South Carolina's own state agency on substance use has called safe recovery housing a substantial gap in our state.

There simply aren’t enough beds.

Since we opened our doors in October 2024, In the Meantime has received 64 applications and housed 17 women, each for an average of 4 to 6 months. Many have moved on to lasting, long-term recovery. But the gap between the women who apply and the women we can house is real. Every number in that gap is a woman still waiting for a bed.

And this is where you come in.

Filling that gap does not just change her life. Researchers who tracked the full cost of recovery housing, including hospital care, jail time, and lost work, found it returned roughly $29,000 per resident to the community over two years.

When a woman gets a safe place to land, the whole community gets something back.

Her children get their mother.
An employer gets a reliable worker.
A neighborhood gets a neighbor.

That is what your gift buys.

She will arrive the way I did: no job, no car, no savings, and a family whose trust she is only beginning to earn back. Your gift carries her through her first three months; the window when she can give herself fully to healing before returning to work and paying her own way.

That window is often the difference between surviving and thriving.
