Austin summers are breaking records, and for people living outside without easy access to shade, air conditioning, or clean water, that heat can be incredibly dangerous. Heat stroke can kill within minutes and can strike anyone exposed to prolonged sun and heat, and for our unhoused neighbors, that exposure is constant from May through September.

It feels like just last month we were handing out winter first aid kits in the cold, but now it's time to shift gears and prepare our summer first aid kits. These kits provide cooling relief, comfort, and basic medical care for our unhoused neighbors facing the heat.

Because Street Medics Austin is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we don't pay sales tax on these supplies, and thanks to some amazing partnerships and bulk purchasing discounts, we've been able to drive the cost of each fully stocked kit down to just $8.50. And that number doesn't tell the whole story because each kit is also packed with socks donated by Academy Sports + Outdoors (through HomeAid Austin), Narcan donated at no cost to us, and an incredible gift from Coppertone: 700 full-sized spray cans of sunscreen worth over $9,000, donated entirely. That means the real value of each kit far exceeds what the price tag suggests.

A $34 donation equips four people with essential summer first aid and heat relief, which is an incredible impact for less than the cost of a meal out.
