No One Should Face Domestic Violence Alone.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time to uplift survivors, raise awareness, and remind our community of our commitment to ensuring that everyone has access to safety, support, and healing.

Across Detroit’s Eastside, survivors of domestic and intimate partner violence are still searching for safety, support, and someone they can trust. Through our Domestic Violence Advocacy Program, we embedded highly trained advocates within the 5th and 7th Police Precincts. These full-time Domestic Violence Advocates (DVAs) worked hand-in-hand with survivors to help them gain access to safety and resources. Our advocates provided 40 hours per week of critical support. They walked survivors through every step:

Filing for Personal Protection Orders (PPOs)
Securing safe housing and shelter
Accessing trauma counseling and legal aid
Navigating the justice system
Rebuilding trust, hope, and a path to safety

In 2024, 1,751 cases of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) were reported in just two Detroit police precincts, 5th and 7th, 600 of them happened in the neighborhoods we serve. In 2025, when fully staffed, our two Domestic Violence Advocates supported 362 survivors in just five months, providing safety planning, PPO navigation, and critical support during moments of crisis. Then federal funding cuts forced the program to shut down.

These aren’t just numbers. They represent women, men, and families - neighbors, coworkers, teens, and elders - trapped in fear, control, and silence, searching for a way out. Since 2013, Jefferson East, Inc. (JEI), in partnership with Wayne State University’s Center for Urban Studies, and AmeriCorps Urban Advocacy Corps, have been leading the fight to change that.

We are deeply appreciative of those who supported our previous fundraising campaign and showed their care for survivors and this important program. Where we once had two full-time advocates serving the 5th and 7th precincts, we now have one part-time advocate supporting survivors across both. While we are grateful to have services restored, the need continues to far exceed our current capacity.

This program wasn’t just a service, it's a lifeline. Together, we provided over 20,370 Detroiters direct supports, but in early 2025, devastating federal funding cuts eliminated AmeriCorps support, and halted this life-saving program.

That’s why we launched Together for Safety, to raise $125,000 to restore full-time DV Advocates and reopen these vital doors of support.

$78 — pays for a Personal Protection Order (PPO), giving survivors a legal path to safety.
$250–$500 — provides 1 to 2 weeks (respectively) of direct advocacy services, including crisis support, safety planning, and connections to housing or counseling.
$1000 - funds one week of full-time Domestic Violence Advocacy
$5000 - funds over a month of full-time advocacy.
