Joe’s Café began as an intimate open‑mic showcase — a space where young artists could breathe, create, and be seen. The very first Café was held in Westampton, NJ in January 2019, honoring Joseph’s birthday on January 14. What started as a celebration of his life has grown into a gathering place for celebration, sharing and community.

This year, Joe’s Café returns to Tabbris in Charlotte, North Carolina, bringing together familiar faces and fresh voices.

A storyteller at heart, Derick joins us once again. Originally from Jacksonville, Florida and now rooted in North Carolina, he carries the dual callings of educator and artist. His background spans middle‑grade English teaching, higher education, and writing for an education news journal. His work reflects a deep commitment to youth, literacy, and narrative truth. Derick recently released the recording of his debut show, On The Way: Spoken Word Poetry Special, continuing his mission to uplift audiences through story and spirit.

Charlotte’s own Aniyah Young returns to the Café with her signature warmth and vocal strength. Born and raised in the Queen City, Aniyah believes deeply in the healing power of art. Her heart for youth and her passion for performance shine through every note she sings. She recently earned recognition as Best Performing Artist for her role in the stage production of The Color Purple.

Joining us for the first time as an entertainer is Zaire King. Not only is he the 2025 JMF Memorial Scholarship recipient and 2024 Performing Arts Contest winner, Zaire is an LA‑based artist, multi‑instrumentalist, producer, and full‑time Jazz Studies student at USC. With more than five years of performance experience, he has released multiple projects including Soulseed Vol. 1 and his latest album, ABC’s. His accolades include Music Center Spotlight semifinalist and the Jazz Excellence Award from Jexa Awards. Zaire has performed alongside renowned musicians such as Michael Paulo, Richard “88 Fingers” Turner, and Ronnie Kaufman. At such a young age, Zaire is a master at the guitar who brings soul, skill, and youthful brilliance to the Café stage.

Our resident host, comedian Gari “Funk” Fields, returns as emcee — and we’re thrilled to have him back. His humor, energy, and heart keep the Café flowing with joy and connection.

Now in its fourth year, Joe’s Café remains what it has always been: a space where community gathers and Joseph’s legacy lives on. With a cozy atmosphere, cool vibe, good food and terrific entertainment, Joe’s Café is the perfect place to have a great time while supporting a worthy cause. Proceeds from the Café continue to support talented youth through the Foundation’s scholarship and grant programs, talent competitions and other programs and activities.
