Background

Justin arrived in the U.S. as a refugee from North Korea over 15 years ago with his parents and older brother. The family endured incredible hardships over the course of their life in North Korea and in the process of escape, losing one child before arriving in the United States.

After arriving in the U.S., Justin and his brother suffered the tragic death of their parents while they were still young students. The two brothers overcame many challenges and worked extremely hard to build a new life for themselves.

In Sickness and In Health

Just last year Justin was married and began a joyful new chapter in his life. Months later they were met with the devastating news of Justin’s stage 4 colorectal cancer. Justin was no longer able to continue working because of his physical condition. The pain of his illness and inability to contribute to his young family’s finances weighs especially heavily on him as they are now expecting a baby.

Justin’s wife is currently working and while they have medical coverage through her insurance, it cannot cover their mounting medical bills. The loss of Justin’s income at a time when they are building their lives and expecting a newborn child further compounds their financial hardship.

We want to bless Justin and his wonderful wife as they prayerfully fight through the challenges ahead of them. We are so moved to witness Justin’s faith and hope in Jesus grow despite his suffering and concern for his family. Please join us in prayer and support for this family.

Our Connection

In 2011 the tragedy that shattered Justin’s family sent shockwaves through all those working on North Korean human rights issues and supporting North Korean refugees in the United States. Their tragedy was, in part, the story of so many refugees suffering from PTSD, isolation, lack of spiritual support and community, and loss of hope.

When we received the terrible news we prayed and considered how we could help the refugees scattered across the U.S. with our very limited resources. Later that year we responded with the launch of the Box of Hope Christmas care package program. We hoped to share God’s love and help them feel connected with community especially during the holiday season. This annual reminder to hold onto hope began our lifeline to the North Korean refugee community, and was the start of our many other outreach programs for the refugees today.
