We are excited that Suzanne Maher-Perkins has donated a capital gift in honor of her father, Ralph Maher. Ralph was a long time supporter of SPOKE and is the uncle of founder and Artistic Director, Michael Dowling.

He was particularly interested in our YouthSPEAK program and our workforce development program at SPOKE. For years he would come and visit our young men in recovery from the Cushing House inspiring them with his experience stench and hope for a better life.

We hope, with your help, to equip the Makers' Room with:

Modern tools and resources to empower young people for future employment opportunities. This initiative can significantly impact skill development, fostering creativity, innovation, and preparedness for the job market.
Educational Programs: Offering workshops or courses on relevant skills
Access to Technology: Providing state-of-the-art tools and equipment, such as computers, software, and other creative technologies.
Mentorship Opportunities: Connecting young people with industry professionals who can guide them through their career paths.
Collaborative Projects: Encouraging teamwork on projects that can enhance participants’ portfolios and provide real-world experience.
Networking Events: Organizing events to help young people connect with potential employers and industry experts.

More about Ralph

He was a graduate of Quincy High School, and studied plumbing and heating at Cambridge School of Plumbing and Heating. He received a degree in Plumbing Design from MIT and took extension courses at Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Ralph enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country with honor during the Korean war. He was stationed aboard the USS Saratoga before being discharged with the rank of Aviation Ordnanceman Third Class after three years of honorable service. He continued to serve in the U.S. Navy Reserves following his release from active duty on December 18, 1958.

He formerly served as Vice-President and Chair with the Massachusetts State Board of Examiners, and was a former Deputy Sheriff with the Norfolk County Sheriff’s office from 1976-2001. He also worked for many years as a Plumbing and Gas Inspector for the City of Quincy, retiring as Chief Inspector. Ralph was currently the Vice-Chairman and Treasurer of the Quincy Housing Authority, a position he has held since July, 2018.
