As the crisp autumn air settles around Kulshan (Mount Baker), we are reminded of this land’s quiet strength—and our shared duty to protect it. Thanks to your support, Kulshan Carbon Trust (KCT) is forging alliances that turn local know-how into climate action. KCT is poised to expand our operations; however, earlier this year, we lost federal funding that would have sustained Kulshan Carbon Trust for four years. This threatens our ability to maintain momentum on our community biochar program, eco-credits for climate resilience initiative, and community engagement efforts in 2026.

We need to raise $40,000 to enable us to continue our operations into next year while we work to secure new sources of funding to replace the sustaining Federal grant that was withdrawn. We are asking you to contribute today to our stopgap campaign to raise $20,000 and secure the full $20,000 match from the Regeneration, Resilience & Reciprocity Fund.

Rooted In Action: Expanding Existing Programs

Eco-credits: Rewarding Regeneration

In 2025, KCT issued its first verified carbon-removal credits for biochar produced during our earlier pilot project. This marks a significant milestone in demonstrating that our nature-based climate solutions can be scientifically credible, community-driven, and financially sustainable.

In collaboration with researchers and stakeholders, the next phase of these eco-credits will expand beyond carbon to include co-benefits such as water retention, soil health indicator monitoring, and crop success, thereby valuing real-world ecological benefits and rewarding landholders. These credits will be marketed locally to create sustainable revenue opportunities for neighbors to support regenerative land care in their communities and across our bioregion.

Biochar: Turning Fire Risk into Healthy Soils

Building on successful demonstration burns, KCT partnered with the Whatcom and Skagit Conservation Districts in 2025 to develop implementation plans for a Community Biochar Program (CBP). This initiative converts excess woody biomass—including hazardous wildfire fuels—into biochar using mobile kilns. Designed for regenerative agriculture and agroforestry, the CBP supports wildfire resilience, soil and crop health, and a local circular economy.

In 2026, we will expand our Community Biochar Program by training land stewards in safe kiln utilization and developing larger-scale biochar systems to reduce emissions and enhance soil carbon. These efforts will help reduce wildfire fuels, bolster rural economies, and build long-term climate resilience.

Community Engagement: Rooted in Relationships

To deepen local engagement, KCT hosted Rooted in Resilience during PNW Climate Week in July 2025 —a public event at Boulevard Park that brought together over 15 partner organizations. Supported by a Project Neighborly grant, we facilitated community conversations centered on equity, ecological regeneration, and shared climate leadership. Feedback from participants highlighted the importance of “building real relationships,” “seeing collaboration in action,” and “learning from Indigenous and land-based perspectives.” These insights continue to shape our strategy as we prepare to facilitate community engagement in 2026 and beyond.

Rooted In the Future: Launching New Programs

Restoring Food Sovereignty & Salmon Habitat: Biochar Enhanced Resilience

Together with Agroforestry Northwest, the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association, the Whatcom Million Trees Project, and Tribal Councils, we are restoring riparian zones using biochar-enhanced soils. This work supports salmon habitats, cultivates community food forests, and advances Tribal food sovereignty by building richer soils that retain water and safeguard the health of local river basins.

Launching Demonstration Projects: Scaling Natural Climate Solutions

From agroforestry to riparian restoration, we will launch and expand pilot projects that demonstrate the advantages of nature-based solutions. These initiatives will help build a regional supply chain focused on ecological forestry and supporting local growers and food systems, to restore soil carbon, improve water retention, and enhance climate resilience in Northwest Washington.
